South Dakota

Prairie land - called the Indians, the 40th State of the USA. South Dakota which is divided in 66 counties is the land of the Lakota Indians, whose conflict ended in 1890 with a bloody battle.

South Dakota is in the north western of the United States. The origin of the name comes from the Indians.

Its nickname is ,The Mount Rushmore State'.

--------------------------- The Mount Rushmore is a mountain in the Black Hills.

The mountain has got its name from Charles Rushmore,

a New Yorker. He had bougt the gold mining rights for this area.

The Mount Rushmore National Memorial shows the heads of the four U.S. presidents: George

Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore

Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln. Each face is over 18 meters high.

--------------------------- In South Dakota are many National Parks and

Indian reservations like the "Badlands

Nationalpark", which opened 1939 and was visited by 936.000

visitors in the year 2003. Another example is the "Wind-Cave- Nationalpark". Its opening is over 110 years ago.

Very beautiful are the Black Hills with the blue lakes and the lovely forests.

--------------------------- The biggest city in South Dakota is Sioux Falls with 140.000

inhabitants. Since 1889, Pierre has been the capital city of South

Dakota. More than 15 000 people live there.

814 000 people live in the whole state.

The seal of South Dakota shows the industry, farming and traffic of the state. At the top of the seal you see a banner with the slogan which was created 1889:

"Under God the people rule".
